I Can See Clearly Now…

Posted on

… the contacts/glasses are gone!

I’ve been a bit MIA because I had laser eye surgery on Wednesday!  All went swimmingly, although I really wasn’t prepared for how uncomfortable it would be.   The first bit there’s a bit of “pressure” on your eyeball (when they’re cutting the flap).  My right eye did OK, but on my left eye I got a bit panicky.  After that was all done, and the laser started, I knew it was almost over, so I didn’t care as much.  But, I was not prepared for the burning on the way home.  (When the hubby had his done they gave him an extra valium before the procedure because he was shaking – I played it cool & didn’t get the valium.  How dumb of me.)

Took 2 valium when I got home and a Tylenol PM and slept for 5 hours.  Up at 7 PM, dinner, then back to sleep around 9:45 or so.  I have to sleep with eye shields on, which is not as terribly uncomfortable as I thought it would be.  Just not super sexy!  Ha!

I was supposed to be able to do cardio workouts yesterday, but I decided to leave work early, so figured it wasn’t a good idea to hop on the elliptical.  2 rest days in a row.  I better get my butt back in gear!  Luckily, I’ve stayed within calorie targets, so I’m still losing, despite not going to the gym.  No weight lifting for a week.  No swimming for 4 weeks – at least, not with goggles.  I could swim without goggles, but I just can’t do that…  (Just postponed my swim club, and will join again on March 1.)

This morning I was 202 pounds.  Woot!  That’s 11.8 pounds since 1/1.  Cannot believe how amazingly well I’m doing!

No big plans this evening.  Headed to a housewarming party tomorrow, so I need to make a healthy alternative to chips & dip.  Probably a veggie tray with a healthy dip, like baba ganoush (Everyday Maven had a great-looking recipe on her site yesterday!  Thinking of bringing that!).

Tomorrow Matt & I also need to shop around for a new bank.  Wells Fargo has decided to start charging us a $13 fee for our joint checking account.  It would be foolish to pay for checking, so we’ll start there, see what the bankers can do for us (the customer service line guy was completely useless), and if we need to, we’ll open a few accounts somewhere else…  It’s a total PITA to change banks, but I will NOT pay to access my own money!

What fun is on your horizon this weekend?

Shops, Check-ins, and Whey…

I Be Shoppin’

I went on a wild goose chase at lunch – except it paid off!  I won a $50 gift card to Lululemon at my gym.  The problem?  Their clothes only go up to a size 12.  Yes, that’s right.  Workout clothes for the teeny elite.  But, they do have amazing gym bags.  And, the one that I wanted was on sale!

At least, it was on sale last Friday online when I picked it out.  Unfortunately, after I picked up my gift card at the gym today, it was gone!  Aaargh!  I called Customer Service, and they told me a few stores in my area that had the bag.  First, I called the one near me – the girl working there said that they didn’t have any bags on sale.  None.  (Except Customer Service said they had a couple, in different colors!)  I then called a few other stores – Santa Monica had one, but I couldn’t get down there, and they don’t hold things (Against company policy.  Weird.)  Decided to head to the store near me first, to see if the girl was right…  If they didn’t have it, a coworker who lives in Santa Monica was going to go pick it up for me down there (of course, they may have sold out by the time she got there).

Anywhoo, I walked in the store, asked if they had the bag, and was immediately sent to the sale rack, where it was waiting for me!  Woot, woot!  So, I got a $118 gym bag (no, I would have never paid that) for $59, minus my gift card, plus tax, I paid $14.  Woot!  Yay me!

I also ran into one of the instructors that I had for Pilates Plus a few months ago.  She remembered me (which is weird, because I only saw her 4 times), and kept saying how strong I was, and if I was doing Pilates somewhere else.  Kind of made me feel like a rock star!

TinyLaLa Check-In

You know what also makes me go, “Yay me”?  This week’s TinyLaLa Check-in.  Today was weigh-in and body fat percentage determination.

  • Weight:  204.8 (Down from 208.6 – so that’s 3.8 pounds in a week!)
  • Body Fat:  36.6% (same as last week)

I asked my trainer about the BF percentage, as it concerned me that it stayed the same.  He didn’t have an issue with it – he said that I wasn’t losing a lot of muscle, because otherwise my BF percentage might go up.  I get that, but I still want the BF percentage to go down (even more so than the weight, actually!).

That’s basically 9 pounds from the beginning of this year (keeping in mind that this is an afternoon weight – this morning in my bathroom before showering I was 203).  And you know what?  I can see a difference.  My shoulders look WAY more toned, than even last week.  Crazy!

Protein Powders, please?

Y’all, I need some recommendations for protein powders.  I finished off my tubs of them from my nutritionist (well, I have 1/2 of one left, but tried it without mixing in any berries this afternoon post-workout and it was terrible!  Super grainy…)  I stopped at Whole Foods on the way home from my workout, and could not make up my mind!

What I’m looking for:

  • >20 g protein
  • < 140 calories
  • < 8 g carbs
  • High in calcium (my current one is 600 mg!!!)
  • Good flavor
  • No soy protein isolates
  • Ideally, it would be organic.  But if not organic, I did find one made from milk from cows in New Zealand (they really don’t farm animals in the massive corporate farms that we use here)

I was thinking that I wanted whey protein concentrate, but that takes longer to break down than whey protein isolate (but isolate isn’t as “good” or clean).  I would like to use the same thing to mix into my breakfast smoothies, but also be good for my post-workout protein shake.  I’m thinking that I might need 2 separate kinds (the one that mixes into my smoothie as a concentrate, for my post-workout as an isolate) – those could then be different flavors (vanilla for smoothie, chocolate for shake).

The “winner” nutrition-wise was Tera’s (and I’ve heard all good things about it), but it’s super expensive (about 4x the cost of the Whole Foods 365 brand one).  But, the 365 only had 15 g protein.  Tera’s is from Wisconsin though (*love*), and it’s organic.   Even the guy at Whole Foods said that it was definitely the “cleanest”.

Why is this so hard?!?

I picked up a few packets to try, but of course, not all have the sample packs available…

What do you use?  Why?  Do you like it?

Holiday Weekend…

Posted on

Oh, the NY Giants just scored another touchdown against my beloved GB Packers.  Harrumph.

Let’s see, what’s been happening in TresLaLa land?

  • I have stayed within my calorie target every day this month!
  • I have earned 3 prizes this month (given TO me BY me) for staying within my calorie targets:  1) I’m allowed to buy coffee & teas at cafes in February (key, because I’ll be on vacation!); 2) 20 songs or 2 albums on iTunes; and 3) New perfume!  (My other 2 perfumes BOTH broke on our way to New Hampshire for Christmas, so I’m super excited to get a whole new scent tonight!)  7 more days of staying on target, and I get a new handbag!  Woot!  14 more days, and I’ll also get to book my spa day at the Four Seasons (I have gift certificates, but am making myself earn the right to use them!)
  • I earned a $50 gift certificate to Lululemon from winning a weight loss contest at the gym at work.  Their clothes won’t fit me, but their gym bags and yoga mats are awesome.
  • I joined the South Coast Aquatics Masters program through April 30 and did my first swim workout in 4 months yesterday!
  • I rescheduled LASIX surgery, and I’m having that done on Wednesday!  Gulp!
  • I finished all 4 of my Pilates Plus classes – and I’m never, ever doing another Pilates Plus class (although it was better at this studio than at the last place I did it)
  • I went shopping yesterday and got:
    • A dark brown suit, complete with jacket, pants and skirt!
    • A light blue sweater
    • A grey sweater dress (I’ve been trying these on everywhere, and they all looked horrible until this one, which is amazing!)
    • A black & white floral pattern wrap sweater
    • Lots of necklaces & earrings

This week is going to be a bit of a strange one, what with Monday being off of work, and having the surgery on Wednesday.  Planning on swimming tomorrow morning (super early), come home, shower, and take a nap, then head down to LA to go to a museum with the hubby.  Dinner tomorrow is out at a place called Steingarten.  I have an Open Table meal deal there that expires this week.  So that’s the plan (breaks with my vow not to eat out in January, but I also refuse to waste money!).

Tonight we’re meeting some friends at the movies to see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  I’ve read all 3 books, and seen all 3 Swedish movies.  The movie is going to have to be pretty awesome to make it worthwhile to remake it, in my opinion.

And, with all of this, I made some Quinoa Chili!  I didn’t take any pictures of it (but trust me, this recipe is a winner!).  I’m not sure where it originally came from – I got it from someone on CalorieKing.  My sincerest apologies for not having the original link!

Indian Quinoa Chili

Adapted from Maura at CalorieKing

Serves: 6

  • 2 Tbsp Red Curry Paste (found in the Indian food section of your grocery store)
  • 2 tsp Ground Cumin Powder
  • 4 cups Reduced Sodium Vegetable or Chicken Broth
  • 2/3 c. quinoa uncooked (original recipe called for red quinoa, but color does not affect taste or texture)
  • 2 med Sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed (about 2 cups)
  • 1 large Red bell pepper chopped (about 2 cups)
  • 2 15oz cans Great Northern beans, rinsed well
  • 1/2 cup lite coconut milk
  • 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes (whirred it in my bullet blender for about 2 seconds to make tomato puree)
  • 1/2 tsp Cayenne pepper
  • Freshly ground black pepper

  1. In a 4 qt. pot, add curry paste, cumin and a little broth. Mash the mixture and stir until smooth. Add the remaining broth, quinoa, bell pepper and sweet potato. Set over high heat and bring to a boil. Cover tightly, reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 10 minutes or until the quinoa begins to absorb the broth.
  2. Add the beans, coconut milk, cayenne pepper and tomato puree to the pot and stir to combine. Cook uncovered for 20-25 minutes until the quinoa is tender and the soup is thickened.
  3. Finish with freshly ground black pepper. Top with plain Greek yogurt if you need to cut the spice a bit (or want to add creamy texture).

SO good, folks!  A nice heat/spice, but not overpowering.  Would be REALLY good if you or someone you love has a cold – will clear out the sinuses!

And we have 4 sets of leftovers for this week.  Yum.

OH, these obliques!

Posted on

I have been a work out MACHINE!  And I’ve got the odd aches & pains to prove it.  Sore obliques?  Check.  That’s kind of hard for me to do – considering my obliques are so far below the padding!  Pretty proud of myself, and the past 10 days.  I’ve worked out every single day (if you include walks with the pups as a workout, which in addition to the walking works the arms quite nicely!) and have stayed within my calorie target with minimal eating back of exercise calories.  I’m almost nervous to say it, but it’s actually been quite easy.

Most of what’s working?  I’m not eating out.  Like, at all.  Nothing from the cafeterias at work (except salad bar, which I got as an addition to the taco meat that I brought from home).  I’m eating within calories, within most of my targets, and have not felt like I’ve been deprived.  That, my friends, is amazing.  I honestly don’t think that I’ve stayed on plan for 10 straight days ever.  EVER.

Today was weigh-in & measurement day – yep, that’s right:  TinyLaLa Check-in.  I arrived at the gym about 30 minutes before I was supposed to, and measurements are supposed to be done “dry” (before warm-up).  So today’s check-in is only weight & BF (keep in mind:  this is at 4:30 PM, and I drank a bottle of water on my way over on accident).

  • Weight:  208.6 (down 2.8 from last week!)
  • Body Fat:  36.6% (down 1.1% from last week!!!)

THAT’s what I’m talking about, friends!  Actually, when you take my weight on 1/1, and my weight this morning, I’ve lost 8 pounds.  Which is Ca-RAZY!  Those first few days I was really getting rid of water, apparently!  But so glad to see that BF percentage moving too – which is really the most important part, anyway!

So here’s the thing…

My tummy isn’t happy.  It revolted last night, in a revolting mess.  One of those times when I reverted back to everything that I know about this world, and even thought, “I hope I’m not pregnant”.  Which is, of course, not at all true.  I want to be pregnant more than anything else in the world, because I cannot wait to hold a lovely baby, made by yours truly and the loving hubby, and nurture it until it revolts against me, at age 17 (please, let it not be any earlier).

That said, I have a weak stomach and a penchant for throwing up if I’m the least bit nauseated.  And if I’m going to toss my cookies every night (and think about it in the morning, and every other time that I eat), I’m not sure that’ll be good for me, or any potential buns in my oven.

So here’s the thing.  I kind of hope that this is the flu.  Or food poisoning.  And when I DO get pregnant, there won’t be any of that nausea stuff to keep me from buying everything in the Pottery Barn Kids catalog.

But if this IS “the real deal” bring it on.  Because I happen to like ginger tea and saltines.  And I cannot wait to love on a baby.  Bring.It.ON.

How come I can’t comment on people’s blogs?  I comment, and I’m doing exactly the way that I always did it, and they’re just not showing up!  What’s up with that?!?

That, coupled with the massive zit that’s making it’s way to my nose (I can feel it when I scrunch my eyebrows!  Yikes), and the fact that I had a sploch of smoothie on my collar ALL day (even during meetings and 1:1s)  makes me upset today.  Seriously:  If we ever meet, and I’ve got food in my teeth, TP on my foot, or my skirt is tucked into my panties, you MUST tell me.  MUST.  Otherwise I’ll stop commenting on your blog…  Wait a minute…

But, never fear, the exerciser is here!

Heading to the gym shortly for a cardio session, and some magazines!  Woot!

The hubby’s heading to a beer tasting, but should be home for dinner.  On the menu:  Taco salads!  Woot!  I love that taco salads always feel like I’m cheating, but I’m not!!!  Love.  And, since I pile them with veggies, there’s a whole lotta food going on.  Love even more!

I missed my afternoon snack — had my morning snack at 11:30 and “lunch” at 2:30, so I don’t really need anything yet.  Will have an apple and a protein shake after the workout.  Stopping at Tarjaaay on the way home for some organization stuff (Gosh, can you tell how much I fall into the whole New Year, New You trap?!?), then hightailing home for those taco salads!

What is it about the New Year?

Posted on

It’s like the first day of school…  I made & ate a good breakfast.  I did my hair & make-up.  I brought a new calendar to work (and promptly filled in all the company’s vacation days…).  It’s such a clean slate!

I’ve been thinking about a few other things that I need to add to my goal/resolution list:

  • I am going to wear make-up to work, and not come in looking like a zombie.  Because everyone knows that zombies don’t get promoted.  (Yes, I know.  You don’t need to wear make-up to get promoted.  But you cannot look like a zombie.  And without make-up, I do.  So there.)
  • I am going to keep up with my budget and  This is on the same vein as my spend less, save more resolution, but it’s more exact.  We just got a crazy high credit card bill.  Granted, it had all the Christmas gifts, and 2 weekends away on there, but still.  It was out of control.  And we’ve got better things to spend our $$$ on.
  • I’m going to be happy with what I have.  Again, this goes along with the Spend less, Save more resolution, but also with the “I love myself” plan.  Will I look better 40 pounds lighter?  Yes.  Will it make my world a better place?  No.  I tend to jump from thing to thing…  I’ll focus on it until I have it (which is a good thing – I call it drive).  But when those are all material possessions, it can be a bad thing.  For example, I NEEDED a potato ricer for Christmas.  Now that I have one, I have no idea what to do with a potato ricer.  Onto bigger ideas:  I hate my car.  It’s a decent car, it works, and it was expensive.  But I don’t like it.  Do I need to research new cars every day?  No.  Do I need to compare my car with others that I see?  No.  Will I start researching them when this car needs a big repair, and I can’t even stand to look at it?  Sure.  But until then, it’ll take me from point A to point B – squeaky brakes and all.

This last one kind of hit me like a ton of bricks.  The hubby and I were in New Hampshire for the holidays.  The homes were historic, and beautiful.  And I wanted one.  I kept picking out different houses that we could move into.  But then I got home.  And I realized, I LOVE living in Southern California.  No, we don’t get flurries of snow on Christmas morning.  But we do have 80* days on New Years.  And that’s something.  Something AMAZING!  No, our home isn’t historic.  But it is big, and open, and bright.  No, family doesn’t live here.  But they do like to travel, and we like to entertain.  It really is a Win-Win!

2012 Goals for a TinyLaLa

2012 Starting Stats:

Weight: 213.6

That’s significantly up from last year at this time.  That said, I’m stronger, and leaner than last year — which tells me that I’ve gained muscle, but haven’t necessarily lost enough fat to make a difference in my weight.  That will change this year!

My trainer will do my body fat and measurements on Tuesday – check in then for a TinyLaLa Check-in!

The stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 2,000 times in 2011. If it were a cable car, it would take about 33 trips to carry that many people.

Pray for This One!

It’s the beginning of the end.  The beginning of the end of the year, that is.  December 2, already!  CRAZY!

Let’s start with my health:

  • I got the results of my glucose tolerance / insulin test.  Normal.  Yay?  Am I glad that I am OK, that I don’t have PCOS, and that I won’t have to take medication for the rest of my life?  YES.  Am I glad that there is now absolutely no reason for my infertility?  No.  I really hate not knowing why something doesn’t work.  Hate it, hate it, hate it.
  • I take a pregnancy test tomorrow morning.  If positive, I’ll head into the fertility clinic for a blood test to confirm and will start on progesterone.  (Pray for this one!!!)
  • If negative, I’m taking December off.  No temperature taking.  No peeing on a stick every morning.  No drugs.  No injections.  Plenty of nookie, though!  And eggnog (well, really, mulled wine.  Because egg nog is gross.)
  • If it’s negative, then I’m getting Lasix eye surgery on January 9.  Woot for being able to see!  If it’s positive, then I’ll have the surgery next December (as late after baby as possible).
December Goals

I haven’t been keeping up with my goal posts (hahaha, get it?  it’s football season?  I slay me), and I figured that I really needed to.  I’ve been wandering a bit aimless these past few months, and haven’t seen any positive progress in my journey.  My own fault.  (Of course).

  • Exercise with a 500 calorie per day burn 6 of 7 days per week through 22 December – this means that I need to wear my HRM
  • While on vacation (24 December through 31 December), be as active as possible
  • Create & stick to a meal plan each week
  • Blog at least 3 times per week
  • Knit or crochet at least 2 times per week
  • Vacuum once per week
  • Send Christmas cards by 20 December
  • Finish editing pics from Africa & upload to Facebook & Picasa!  Order photo books for kiddos!
  • Make time to meet with friends – try to do active things (not just eating Christmas cookies!)
  • Weight on January 1:  Less than 200

Do you make monthly goals?  Do you stick to them?
